Barnes & Noble working on it’s own eBook Reader?

The rumor at last week’s CTIA conference is that Barnes & Noble is looking for a partner to power it’s own eBook reader with “Whispernet-like” functionality. Sprint and AT&T are in the running, supposedly. (What will they call it? The Flicker? As in “Flicker of hope of competing with Amazon”? )

If this is going to turn into yet another platform war, count me out. I’ve got a Kindle and I’m sticking with it.

$99 3G netbook from AT&T this summer - without Windows

The AT&T rumor mill continues to churn. In addition to a ton of iPhone-related rumors, there’s talk of a $99 netbook with a 3G modem to be released this summer. Yeah, it’ll probably have a 2-year contract and based on the rumor (and the price) it most likely won’t run Windoze.

That means it will have to be a OS that natively supports the 3G hardware. (Android perhaps?)

Since its arrival in European markets, we knew that we’d eventually be getting the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 with integrated 3G wireless here in the colonies. Well, that time has arrived.

Sign up for a two-year contract with AT&T and you can get a $120 rebate on the purchase of your Dell netbook. Want to run Ubuntu on your Dell Mini 9 while you’re surfing at 3G wireless speeds?

You’re out of luck.

3G wireless will only be available on Windows XP models. Fear not - I’m sure some industrious hacker will have a fix for Ubuntu soon after launch.

It’s here: A FREE Eee PC 901 with a 3G Wireless Contract

Well not here, per se, but in the UK.

Orange, the UK wireless carrier, is set to launch the Eee PC 901 with built-in HSDPA connectivity. The package will cost 25 pounds (~$38.50 USD) per month and will included 3 GB of data transfer and 100 free text messages.

The hardware is what we’ve come to expect in this category these days, though with a larger than usual 16GB SSD.

MSI to launch 3.5G wireless Wind netbook this month

MSI is planning to launch the Wind U120 with a built-in 3.5G wireless module in November. The netbook will feature Intel’s Atom N270 processor, 1GB memory, 120GB hard drive and Windows XP Home and be priced around NT$18,000 ($552 USD). You can have any color you want, as long as it’s white or black.

So far, it looks like availability will be limited to Vobo Telecom in Taiwan or some yet-to-be-determined European carriers. Not a peep on U.S. availability.

ASUS launches Eee PC 1000H “Go” with integrated 3G wireless

[ASUS] is teaming up with Italian wireless carrier TIM to offer the Eee PC 1000H Go, which is basically an Eee PC with a built in HSUPA modem. If that whole “Go” thing sounds familiar, that’s probably because Asus has already released the Eee PC 901 Go in Europe. And the 901 Go is, you guessed it, basically an Eee PC 901 with a bundled 3G modem.

The Eee PC 1000H Go will set you back 479 Euros. (~$614 USD)
