A few weeks back, Google announced a new and improved version of Gmail for the iPhone which includes such great features as Search and Offline mode. Offline mode takes advantage of Safari’s implementation of the HTML 5 Database spec by allowing sites/applications to store data locally within the browser.

I noticed a couple of weeks ago that Gmail was behaving strangely on my iPhone - it wasn’t loading new mail and ultimately timed out with a Gmail server error. Frustrated, I remembered the local database. Here’s what I did to fix it.

NOTE: The usual warnings apply - technically, there should be no issues if you do this since Gmail stores all your mail in the cloud. That said, PERFORM THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.

On the iPhone, go to your Settings screen and select Safari.

In the Safari settings, select Databases.

In the Databases settings, find and tap the Gmail database for the problem email address. It will be under the mail.google.com domain.

On the Databases settings screen, tap Edit in the upper right corner, then tap the red minus sign to remove the database. When you’re finished, tap Done in the upper right corner.

Reload Gmail in Mobile Safari and it should refresh the database and all should be back to normal.

I applaud the ingenuity and creativity of these folks and am happy to support them.

That said, I’m torn: what happens when Apple releases a software update that effectively blocks the use of said software? Do I get a refund? Probably not.

Most likely, I’ll have to wait until the iPhone Dev Team jailbreaks the latest software update, then wait for the developer of my paid software to create an update that works on the newly jailbroken phone…then hope that Apple doesn’t negate it all over again.

Here’s another Apple Netbook rumor though this time, hypothesized by the folks at Apple Matters. Hadley Stern cites these five reasons why we’ll see an Apple Netbook at MacWorld in January:

Reason 1: It’s the economy, stupid
Reason 2: Chips, chips, chips
Reason 3: The iPhone
Reason 4: Steve gets to say he invented it
Reason 5: Another reason to extend iTunes Reach

You’ll have to read the full post here for the details.

I’m starting to sway in the direction of the affirmative: Apple will likely launch something for the low-end of the market to compete with netbooks. However, I don’t think it will be a netbook as you and I know them to be at present - it will be something that can only come from the minds at Jobs & Co.

Stay tuned. January 5th will be here before you realize it.

A group of hackers have created a work around using this software, similar to the method used to get sound working on the MSI Wind running under OS X. It’s as simple as installing the Apple Developer Tools (found on your OS X install discs, if you have them, or they can be downloaded from the Apple Developer Connection web site) then installing a different audio driver to support the Eee PC hardware.

ThinkFree released a version of their office suite for netbooks a few weeks ago and it’s pretty impressive.

A full license for the software is $50 but if you completed their survey, you would have received a complimentary license. (I received mine yesterday.) There are versions for Windows, Linux and OS X, though Apple doesn’t yet offer a MacBook in the commonly expected netbook form factor.

So what do people use netbooks for? Following are some results of the survey from the ThinkFree blog.

Note that the published results are not exactly scientific - they don’t provide any quantitative data and the sample set consists of people who were engaged through the use of a promotion - not exactly an unbiased lot.
