jkkmobile has branded the new 10 cell 13000mAh battery for the Asus Eee PC 901 as the “ugliest battery ever”. (It makes the 9-cell for my Acer Aspire One look svelte!)

The 10-cell behemoth was received recently by an EeeUser forum member who posted images of his new battery on the forums. According to JKK, the battery should offer up 10-14 hours of battery life, so if you really need it, you’ll overlook the aesthetics of this battery for it’s utility.

Buy.com has a product listing for the Lenovo IdeaPad S9. Why is that surprising? Because it wasn’t supposed to be available in the U.S.!

Like the S10, the S9 has a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU but instead of the 10-inch display of the S10, it has a 8.9-inch display. The S9 also appears to have less storage and is rockin’ a Linpus Lite Linux installation - the same Fedora-based distro found on the Acer Aspire One. Pricing starts at $349.99.

Wait, what’s that? The S10 currently costs $349 and it has a bigger screen and Windows XP?

Well, yes, but that’s currently a promotional price that Lenovo has put out for the holidays. I expect that the S10 will return to its original price in January 2009.

I’m starting to sway in the direction of the affirmative: Apple will likely launch something for the low-end of the market to compete with netbooks. However, I don’t think it will be a netbook as you and I know them to be at present - it will be something that can only come from the minds at Jobs & Co.

Regardless of the reason, both HP and Lenovo have lowered the prices of their flagship netbooks.

Laptoping reported that HP will be reducing the price of the Mini 1000 to $359.99, down from $399.99. As a reminder, specs for that machine include an 8.9-inch display, 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1 GB of RAM, an 8GB SSD, a standard 3-cell battery and Windows XP.

Coincidentally (?) Lenovo dropped the price of the IdeaPad S10 to $449, down from $459. Specs for that machine include a 10.2-inch display, 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB HDD, a standard 3-cell battery and an integrated webcam. The price cut is only applicable to the original white machine - still no price reductions on the Red and Pink. I guess color is still in demand this holiday season.

He cites the economy, coupled with the surge in popularity of netbooks, as the impetus for the device.

At $999, the least expensive MacBook is twice or more the cost of the most frugal Windows alternatives, Gottheil says….”It is too much to ask consumers to pay more than twice as much for a PC in these times,” the analyst says.

Sure, Stevie J. insists that the iPhone is “netbook-like” and though it would seem to have the processing power to perform in this way, the device doesn’t have a keyboard or basic productivity applications, making it less than useful as a netbook.

Others would argue that Apple is already in the netbook market with the introduction of the MacBook Air, but the machine is too large and without enough ports (or battery life)  - and too expensive - to really be a competitor in the netbook category.

I use a MacBook as my primary machine and would never go back to a Windows machine. That said, I love my Linux-based netbook for its simplicity and utility - and the fact that it was super cheap.

Would I purchase a Mac netbook? Probably not, but there are too many variables in the equation to rule it out at the moment, the largest of which is whether Jobs & Co. would consider making a netbook in the first place. I’ll consider it when and if it happens.

New MSI Wind Specs

MSI is adding two new netbooks to its lineup: the MSI Wind U110 and the U115.

The U115 will feature a new “hybrid storage” sytem comprised of both a solid state disk and a traditional magnetic storage hard drive. The machine will use the SSD as the sytem disk while the HDD will be used for mass storage of applications, documents and media files.

In addition to being more durable, solid state drives can also be faster and run cooler since they have no moving parts. That said, we can only assume that the drives in the U115 will be of the faster variety otherwise, why bother with the hybrid system, right?

The U115 will be available with an 8 GB SSD/80 GB HDD, a 16 GB SSD/120 GB HDD, or a 32 GB SSD/160 GB HDD. The netbook will also use the Intel Atom Z530 processor, not the commonly used N270 chip used in many (most?) other current generation netbooks. The Z530 uses less power than the N270 and any netbooker will appreciate the (expected) increase in battery life.

The MSI Wind U110 has the same basic specs as the U115, except that it uses only traditional HDD’s offered in 120 GB, 160 GB, or 250 GB sizes. In addition to the Intel Atom Z530 CPU, both machines will feature a 10-inch display running at a 1024 x 600 resolution, 802.11b/g + draft-n WiFi, Bluetooth, and a 4-in-1 multi-format card reader. The U110 will ship with 1GB of RAM, while the U115 will ship with 1 or 2 GB or RAM. No word on what the maximum RAM capacities will be although I hope they will continue to be easily upgraded, like the Wind 100.

Other unknowns include OS options (Windoze? Linux?) and of course, pricing.

MSI Wind Box

Apparently the Neton is not enough for MSI. In addition to the all-in-one touchscreen nettops announced last week, MSI has recently shown off the MSI Wind “Box”. The unit resembles an MSI Wind netbook without a keyboard or screen - in fact, the video, SD card slot and USB ports are all in the same spots - I wouldn’t be surprised if it were the same motherboard as the MSI Wind U100.

The MSI Wind Box has a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1 GB of RAM, a 160 GB HDD, 802.11b/g WiFi and comes standard with Windows XP installed. Expect souped up models to follow. The base model will sell for about $258 USD - not bad for a cheap little machine, providing you have your own keyboard, mouse and display.

Samsung NC10 in Black

The power-sipping Samsung NC10 used to be available in any color you wanted - as long as that color was white.

Those of you wanting a bit more variety can now get the NC10 in white, black, and “blue-tone” (with a blue chassis/lid and black keyboard - kind of MacBook-esque, no?).

All models have the same specs and include a 10.2-inch screen, 1GB of RAM and an Intel Atom processor.
